3 Effective Steps Homeowners Can Take When Maintaining Their Septic System

Home & Garden Blog

If you live out in the country and rely on a septic system for waste disposal, then it's so important that you take good care of it, over the years. Otherwise, you will experience costly repairs. So that this doesn't happen, get in the habit of executing the following maintenance steps.

Monitor What Is Flushed Down Toilets

You and your family need to be extremely careful, as far as what's flushed down the toilets. That's because not every item will be broken down in your septic tank. Certain items could affect the tank and cause costly issues later on.

Items that shouldn't be flushed include tampons, tissue paper, makeup, chemicals, paints, oils, cigarettes, and prescription medication, to name a few. Ideally, you should just be flushing toilet paper down your toilets. Following this flushing regimen will ensure your septic tank performs optimally each day.

Create a Perimeter Around the Drain Field

The drain field is one of the most important components of your septic system. If it gets damaged or clogged, your septic system will not work great anymore. To avoid issues with this component all together, create a perimeter.

Mark off this area with some sort of fence or tape. With this perimeter created, you'll know exactly where not to walk and drive lawn equipment machinery. You wouldn't want to puncture this system by applying too much force to it, after all. Just create a system that lets you see exactly where the drain field is.

Have System Inspected Annually

One of the most important preventative maintenance steps you can perform, for a septic system, is to have it inspected professionally, at least once a year. These septic tank maintenance inspections are thorough and will shed light on any potential problems you may have overlooked, over the past couple of months.

A licensed contractor will check the septic system's integral components, including the drain field, non-perforated pipe, and manhole. The contractor also will see how full your septic tank is. If waste has reached the full line, they'll let you know. You can then hire a company to pump your tank before it overflows.

Having a property with a septic system means being extremely responsible with its maintenance. This doesn't have to be that difficult. You just need to monitor important systems and follow strict protocol throughout the year. As long as you keep a consistent septic tank maintenance schedule, you can avoid a lot of issues.
